Alchemy is defined as a seemingly magical process of creation, transformation, or combination. In a sense all art is alchemy. For me as an artist, every brushstroke, every color choice, every positioning of a mark is in some sense, alchemy. I have a sense of what my theme and goal is, but how I get there is always a surprise. I have never made a work that ended up looking like the initial image on the plate. It is as if the plate has engaged me in a conversation, constantly asking me questions, probing for new ideas. The work pushes me, challenges me to get to the core of my idea.
