Whenever I am in Washington, D.C., I make a pilgrimage to the Phillips Collection, although small by most museum standards, it is nonetheless one of the best art museums in the country. The first work I visit is by Claude Monet and is titled The Road to Vetheuil. For me, it’s a perfect painting — every brush stroke, every point of color, the composition itself. I love finding myself on that road. Giverny represents my attempt to capture just the smallest fragment of Monet’s world of color and of his garden at Giverny.
